Financial Support

You may be entitled to benefits from the government through Centrelink and other agencies:

Abstudy: financial support may be accessed if you are an Indigenous secondary or tertiary student. Phone Centrelink: 13 2317
Austudy: financial support for students over 25.

Families SA: support through emergency financial assistance and counselling. Phone (08) 8226 7000
Rent Relief: Housing SA provides financial assistance to people on low incomes who are renting in the private rental market.

Youth Allowance: financial assistance if you are a young person under 25 and you are studying, undertaking training, looking for work, or sick. Phone Centrelink 13 2490
Newstart Allowance: if you are unemployed, Newstart Allowance helps you while you are looking for work and allows you to participate in activities designed to increase your chances of finding work. Phone Centrelink 13 1021
Health Care Cards: this can assist with medical expenses, pharmaceutical expenses, and are available to low income earners, full time students receiving youth allowance or people receiving Abstudy. Phone Centrelink 13 1021
Travel Concessions Card: accessed through Families SA, this card can provide you with discounted public transport rates. Phone (08) 8226 7000

Have a budget made up and don’t spend over this amount
Have a list of items you intend to buy and stick to it
Be wary of enticements like red-hot specials
Check through catalogues for genuine specials on items that you need
Compare prices between sellers
Examine the goods carefully, sometimes packaging can mislead you about the actual quantity
Keep all receipts and check out the warranty
Avoid shopping when you are hungry or feel like you have nothing better to do

Remember a bargain’s not a bargain if you end up wasting money on something you don’t really need in the first place.
